Wayuu Taya Foundation - Wednesday, 26 June 2013 05:51

In an alliance aimed at improving the quality of life of  indigenous communities, the IV Wayuu Taya Health Drives 2013 took place from June 17th to June 20th, 2013, benefiting thousands of indigenous children, women, and men.

The Wayuu Taya Foundation, in alliance with different organizations, took part in the IV Wayuu Taya Health Drives 2013 from June 17th to June 20th, 2013. For the fourth consecutive year, the indigenous communities of the Wayuu and the Añu from the state of Zulia in Venezuela received medical assistance in the following areas: odontology, pediatrics, internal medicine, vaccinations, gynecology, ophthalmology, nutrition, deworming, glycemic testing, blood pressure testing, and medical prescriptions.

Many health oriented workshops took place, wherein which individuals learned about such health and prevention topics such as: antidrug campaigns, the effects of alcohol on the body, nutrition and a balanced diet, sexually transmitted diseases, proper use of birth control, breast cancer screenings, sexual education, personal hygiene, parasite prevention, dental care, and more.

The health drives took place in four populous community areas each day. Starting in Paraguaipoa, the health drives went to La Laguna de Sinamaica, Internado de la Mision de Guana, and Wayuu Taya’s very own Tepichi Talashi School.

We want to extend our gratitude to all those that came together and collaborated in the health drives. Our 2013 health drives helped over 55,000 indigenous people. Together we can work to eradicate the major illnesses that affect the indigenous communities in the Guajira region.
